In the early 1600s, the Dutch naval fleet was the largest in the world and their sailors inked tattoos of a pig and a hen on their feet to protect them because crates of pigs and hens were often the only items left floating after a shipwreck.The sailors believed a pig and hen tattoo would help them survive the strongest of storms and return home safely.
